Call to Congregational Meeting

Sunday, May 17th 4pm

Followed by a Potluck around 6pm

Dear Members and Friends of BUUF,

You are invited to attend the Annual Congregational Meeting on Sunday May 17th, starting at 4pm, directly followed by a potluck dinner. Please bring your own table service and a dish to share! The meeting will be held at the Boise Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (BUUF), 6200 Garret Street, Garden City. Child care will be provided. Please contact the office staff with your child care needs.

Friends and members are encouraged to attend and participate in our annual business meeting.

   Only members can vote.

The Annual Meeting will review the 2015 fiscal year (July2014- June 2015), with emphasis on the Budget and election of officers. The meeting will also focus on the many accomplishments of the past year and appreciate the many congregants who have contributed to the work of the church.

The board also plans to continue the new practice of holding a congregational meeting at the beginning of the program year. Please look for more information in late summer.

Bring Flowers June 7, Flower Communion

Sunday, June 7 will be our Flower Communion when we go to a single service at 10 a.m. for the summer months. People each bring a flower or two and then at the end of the service everyone picks out a different flower to take home. The flower communion was an idea of Norbert Capek, minister of a large Unitarian church in Prague. He thought that flowers help us understand our beliefs, that we are all different and yet we all have worth, we each have our own beauty. Also, that we, like flowers, not only bloom where we're planted, but we travel - send out seed, send out tendrils to find better light and better soil.

Courtyard Concert Series Coming!

Mondays in July

Marti Gudmundson, Music Committee Chair & Concert Series Coordinator

Come enjoy Monday evenings in July listening to a variety of local music in BUUF's lovely courtyard! Bring your friends and family and pack a picnic dinner to enjoy outside. We hope that anyone and everyone who enjoys music will come - neighbors, friends, BUUF members and friends, folks from across the Treasure Valley.

*** I'll be seeking volunteers to help with these four events: volunteer monitors (trained by Bridge Event Center staff this spring), ticket takers, merchandise table monitors, set-up/breakdown help, publicity helpers, posting flyers, etc..

We are also in need of more shade canopies and any media connections with local newspaper or television calendar editors. Please let me know if you'd like to help. Watch for sign-up sheets or contact me, Marti Gudmundson, at martiloo429@gmail.com or cell - (612) 722-9132.

Speak From the Heart; Listen With Your Whole Being

Louise Jacobsen

In true community, people know they are safe to speak their most vulnerable truths straight from the heart. Because in true community, people listen with their whole being, without attempting to offer advice, heal or convert others. It provides a safe space for a person to discover their own truth.

Creating this community is the goal of the Creating Compassionate Community covenant groups. We do this by studying and practicing Compassionate Communication based on the work of Marshall Rosenberg and his book Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life.

Joan Landsberg shared about her experience: "I've learned to ask 'real questions for real information' instead of offering unasked for advice disguised as a question, as in, 'Have you thought of doing such and such?' We learn Compassionate Communication by doing it, which is leading to a deepening of community."

The Creating Compassionate Community groups meet every two weeks at BUUF. They are ongoing groups with renewable four-month commitments. New sessions will begin June 11 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) and 18 (1:00-3:00 p.m.). Childcare may be arranged. For more information, contact Lars Bergeson, larsavatar@gmail.com, 208-860-5575; or Louise Jacobsen, louisej9630@gmail.com, 208-891-8062.

Leadership

In the Interim

Our work together as Interim Minister and congregation is nearly done. Indeed, the most significant task - calling your next settled minister - has been successfully accomplished.

Someone described Candidating Week with Rev. Sara LaWall as a week-long party. It sounds like you made a strong connection with her to begin your on-going relationship. Bravo! Brava! Good Work!

The Board, with the help of the Stewardship Team and Finance Committee, has a budget to present to you at the Annual Meeting Sunday that will fund some long-time dreams of yours. I don't want to steal their thunder before the meeting, though I do think it will prove to be a positive, forward-moving meeting that will carry on the amazing energy so many of you reported after Candidating Week.

Realizing dreams is always a stretch for a congregation - the best kind of stretching that the mission of the church means to help you do. If you have not yet completed a pledge card, please get yours in as soon as you can.

And, if after such an uplifting week with Rev. Sara, you feel inspired to increase your pledge to helping your ministry together get off on sound footing, then go right ahead.

As I said on Celebration Sunday, this year you have the opportunity to give to both the immediate future of BUUF and its long-term existence as an institution that does great good in the world. And you have done it. You have proved yourselves, once again, to be an enthusiastic and generous, forward thinking and devoted congregation of such good people.

Woo Hoo! You can be so proud of yourselves!

Serving as your Interim Minister has been a gift and an honor. For me, the best and most satisfying result of my time with you is something yet to unfold. What will make me that happiest is a long-term and successful partnership with Rev. Sara. That will be far more your doing, yet I will be following your progress together from afar and with interest and affection, my prayers and continued good wishes.

May it be so.

With love,

Dana
