Stand up and be counted!

RE registrations are hot off the press and ready to be filled out!

Have you seen the bright green RE registration forms? It's fall and that means it's time to  fill out your annual registration for your children in RE. This most important form is a way  for you to let us know more about your child(ren) so that we can make their RE experience  the best it can be. We also need your most current contact info so that we can keep you in  the loop for all things RE and beyond here at BUUF. Now's the time to fill out
an RE Registration form and return one form per family, including nursery-aged children. Forms are available in the BUUF information rack in the north vestibule, in the classrooms or on the BUUF website. Thank you for your quick response. We are aware that every family has
different financial circumstances so our registration fees are $0-$30 per child with a $75  maximum per family. Registration allows us to contact your family about events at BUUF,  special classroom activities and helps us to get to know your children better.

Religious Exploration DRE Column
Come Build a Land
Emmie Schlobohm, Director of Religious Exploration

One of my favorite hymns is We'll Build a Land. The lyrics call us to work together to build a land "where justice shall roll down like water and peace like an ever-flowing stream". Justice
work is important to us as Unitarian Universalists. I know that Paul and I found BUUF because we were looking for a community that we could work with to make a difference in the world. The sense of a spiritual home and beloved community came later after we started attending most every Sunday. We brought our boys here so that they could develop a sense of shared purpose and know that they were a part of a larger movement that was doing justice work in our Boise community and out in the larger world.

Our second UU Principle states "...we affirm and promote justice, equity and compassion in human relations". How do we as UUs live our principles? We come to church and put extra
money in the collection plates for our monthly plate partner. We join in on justice movements on social media sites, and we go to the capitol steps to stand in solidarity to promote equity and
compassion for marginalized populations. These are all good work of the heart and we need to keep it up. And we can do more!

How can families participate in deeper justice work on a regular basis during the rest of the week? How can we raise our children to feel that participation in this justice work is a normal part of everyday life and something we just do like going to the grocery store or playing at the local park? I'm sure that you have ideas and answers to these questions that your family does on a regular basis. I would love to have you share them on our Facebook page that is specifically for Religious Exploration here at BUUF. Shared ideas and community notifications can be a powerful tool, not only to help a worthy cause, but also to build a community that does this work together. You can find us at https://www.facebook.com/buufre

Other opportunities to join in are happening this Sunday at BUUF and beyond...

 Children will have the chance to vote for their favorite plate partners with their families  after each service. Look for their "bundle of beans" that they will get at RE at the end of class. You can find a list of our plate partner nominees on our website
http://boiseuu.org/SocialJustice.html#nextpp

 On the first Sunday of every month, October through May, the sermon and the RE classes will be focused on the goals that our monthly plate partner for that month is working toward. First Sundays will be Justice Sundays in the sanctuary and the RE
classrooms.

 Justice Sundays in RE will center on that goal with the idea of building partnerships with the organization and creating/inventing ways to make a difference with the organization for that month and beyond. Our elementary classroom will be set-up as a Makerspace.

Check out this website to find out more about this exciting movement within our denomination. http://callandresponse.blogs.uua.org/makerspace-a-new-way-in-religious- education/

 The RE community will be posting ways to tie-in with our monthly plate partners and others as a family, as a congregation, and in RE.

This is just the next step in our journey together as we build a land where justice rolls and peace flows. May it be so!
Social Justice Outreach
Plate Partner for October
The Plate Partner for September is BUUF's own "Pay It Forward Fund."

JUST PIFF IT - OR IT'S TIME TO TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN
Eight years ago we created the Rev. Elizabeth Greene Pay It Forward Fund to address a need among our community for short term emergency monetary assistance.  That need, unfortunately, is as prevalent now as it was then. In the last year we have helped members and friends stay in their homes, pay for groceries, utilities, medical expenses, and other basic needs of living.  Each year in October the Congregational Care Team (CCT) asks that this community put a little something extra in our collection baskets for this fund

25% of our October offertory collection will go to this fund.  If you would like to make an additional contribution, please indicate that on the memo line of your check, or mark a pew envelope to indicate "Social Justice." And, as always, thank you for your generosity in supporting our greater community.

Your Chance to Vote
Vote for Our Next Round of Plate Partners!

We have 23 amazing nominations for this next year of Plate Partners (organizations BUUF supports by giving away a percentage of our monthly offering). Voting will continue this Sunday after each service at the table near the front of the hall. Each voter gets 9 beans to choose his/her favorite projects by placing the beans in the corresponding container. Children and youth are invited to vote with their families and will be given their own bag of beans during their Religious Exploration class time. You may use all nine for one project or spread them out to vote for multiple projects. The choice is yours, but you only get nine. The nine projects with the most beans will become our plate partners for November 2015 - September 2016. Three projects are ones we've committed to supporting each year. They include: The congregations' Pay It Forward Fund, The Meszko Partner Church Scholarship Fund, and Habitat for Humanity.

Fellowship Family Fun Nights
Fellowship Fun Nights Begin Again

Festivities Committee is sponsoring Fellowship Fun Nights with potlucks on second Saturdays beginning October 10th. This will have a Harvest Theme of All Things Pumpkins. Think of recipes for entrees, side dishes or desserts with pumpkins or squash for your potluck dish.

If you have pumpkins, bring them for pumpkin carving and painting.

We will be welcoming Rev. Sara LaWall and her husband Michael Alvarado and sons William and Gavin to Boise and Idaho. We encourage everyone to write a note to the family to tell them of places and things that you enjoy in Boise and Idaho.

Come in costume if you'd like. These Fellowship Fun Nights are a great way to get to know other BUUFers. We'll have prizes for delicious food dishes, best pumpkin decorations and best costumes.

In order to address the diversity of dietary needs, think about bringing a vegetarian or vegan dish and labeling it as such. Bring a dish to share and your own utensils and plates.

It's Back! Movie Time
Manos: the Hands of Fate

Once again, just in time for Halloween, one of the worst movies ever made, rears its ugly head! But this time, it's the Restoration, in its original, full-color incompetence! You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll ask yourself, "Why did they ever do this?" and perhaps more to the point, "What am I doing here?"

For a frightful evening of fun, join us at BUUF on Friday, October 30th at 7:00 pm in the north wing. Free admission (donations to BUUF accepted), free popcorn and lemonade.

"Manos," named the "Worst Movie Ever Made" by Entertainment Weekly Magazine and featured in an article in the October, 2015 edition of Playboy, has become a cult classic. It has spawned stage plays, video games, a puppet play, and attempts at prequels and sequels. We have a choice: the Mystery Science Theater 3000 riff version with all of its laughs, and the
newly restored original. Which should we watch?

On a personal note, Bryan Jennings' father played the sheriff! Costumes are not required, but they couldn't hurt!

Friendship Dinners
Have You been to a Friendship Dinner Yet?
These Friendship Dinners in a home provide one of the most enjoyable and important aspects of BUUF - getting together with like-minded people in a social setting and getting to know each other better - especially new folks.

The Sign-up Form is on the hospitality table on the north side of the Sanctuary. The more folks we have, the more fun! Join us. We need hosts. If you are able to host, contact Nancy Harms 658-1710, please say how many you can seat, besides yourself. Are you curious about BUUF and would like to get to know us a little better? Sign up to attend a dinner. The dinners are potluck, the host will call you to discuss what to bring. The next dinners will be Friday or Saturday, October 23 or 24.

Chalice Circles Forming
Sign up Sunday
Chalice Circles are forming mid-October.  These circles of 8 - 10 participants meet for 6 - 8 sessions, generally every other week to talk about interesting topics that will stimulate your thinking and beliefs.  The curriculum provides provocative questions and readings.  The circles are open to everyone and child care can be arranged.

We have circles still open on MondayTuesday, Wednesday nights and Wednesday and Friday afternoons.

If you have questions about participating in a chalice circle please contact Leslie Miller gypsycat1353@yahoo.com.  Signups sheets are on the Hospitality table in the Sanctuary.

Mindful Meditation
Join Us!
Monday evenings, 6:30-8:00 p.m.
North Wing, Fahs Room

"We spend so much of our lives trying to avoid the present by fitfully rehashing the past and rehearsing the future" (Robert Caldwell, Cedar Lane UU Church, Bethesda, MD)

Mindful meditation essentially is being attentive to the present moment, this moment, NOW! Practiced regularly, mindfulness can become a fundamental way of being whether we are sitting in meditation, shopping for groceries, talking to a friend, or driving in rush hour traffic. Over time, this practice can help us feel more at ease with ourselves and with others, have a greater sense of integration of mind and body, and a greater receptivity to the spiritual.
