"Social Justice Beyond the Plate"
What a wonderfully diverse selection of Plate Partners we have chosen for this coming year (see the full list HERE). I am excited to learn more about all the issues they represent and weave them throughout the life of the congregation. We will explore them in our Justice Sunday worship services on the first Sunday of every month, in religious education for youth and adults, and highlight the many ways we can get involved with each organization's work beyond our offering contribution. Look for the table display featuring our monthly plate partner in the Sanctuary during coffee time.

Our social justice work need not end with our plate partners. Many worthy organizations were nominated and many offered simple opportunities for involvement with the issue and organization. Our Social Justice Council encourages members to follow their justice passions and support projects beyond our plate partners. All you need is a small team of people willing to work with you. If you'd like to propose and lead a social justice project or group focused on an issue, please talk with me or Debra Smith, our Social Justice Council chair, buuf.justice.outreach@gmail.com.

Social Justice is a vital part of this Fellowship's ministry. Your board continues to make it a priority in its own ministry goals (based upon your shared visions): "Social Justice Ministries will help guide and inform all aspects of BUUF's congregational life." As issues in alignment with our principles and values bubble up in the community and the legislature, BUUF will be there to raise our voices and advocate; issues like the state legislature taking on Planned Parenthood, the rising anti-refugee/ant-Muslim sentiment, and climate change. Please help us continue to keep Social Justice in the forefront of our ministry by bringing such issues to my attention and to the attention of our Social Justice Ministry Council.

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."      - Margaret Mead

In faith and action,
Rev. Sara

BUUF Ministry Highlight
Meet Our Congregational Care Team (CCT)

As this month's plate partner is our fellowship's Pay It Forward Fund, which is stewarded by members of our Congregational Care Team, we'd like to highlight their particular ministry to this congregation. This team exists to offer support and care to members facing difficult times. Whether you or a loved one is sick, dealing with financial challenges, or relationship struggles, they are here to help. They help keep Rev. Sara informed about pastoral needs and help coordinate practical support like meals, rides, or a friendly ear. They are the extended arms of the fellowship here to embrace our members and friends in their time of need. They coordinate and support logistics for our memorial services. They are and extraordinary team with hearts of gold and they are here for you. Please feel free to reach out if you or someone you know is struggling.

Social Justice Outreach
Plate Partner for October
The Plate Partner for October is BUUF's own
"Pay It Forward Fund."

JUST PIFF IT - OR IT'S TIME TO TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN
Eight years ago we created the Rev. Elizabeth Greene Pay It Forward Fund to address a need among our community for short term emergency monetary assistance.  That need, unfortunately, is as prevalent now as it was then. In the last year we have helped members and friends stay in their homes, pay for groceries, utilities, medical expenses, and other basic needs of living.  Each year in October the Congregational Care Team (CCT) asks that this community put a little something extra in our collection baskets for this fund.

by sierranm
25% of our October offering collection will go to this fund.  If you would like to make an additional contribution, please indicate that on the memo line of your check, or mark a pew envelope to indicate "Social Justice." And, as always, thank you for your generosity in supporting our greater community.

The Pancakes are Coming!
Mark your calendars for BUUF's second annual Pancake Supper, Saturday, Nov. 7. 6 p.m. It is a "Pay as You Wish" Fundraiser.
All are welcome: Members, Friends, Neighbors.  Children and adults are invited to wear your Halloween costumes!  Pancakes are made from scratch and gluten-free will be offered along with bacon and sausages.

Moms Demand Action Idaho
Thursday, October 22 nd  at 6:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary.
Since the Roseburg, OR shooting, many have been asking what we can do to affect change in our communities. Join the growing Idaho chapter of
Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America for a presentation and discussion on the work they are doing in our community. They will be introducing the BeSMART community education program designed to address child access prevention and safety. This year we have seen 200 unintentional child shootings in the US. Most of these injuries and deaths could have been prevented with safe firearm storage.  The meeting is open both long-term activists and those new to gun violence prevention and will include discussion about Moms Demand Action's general mission and upcoming volunteer opportunities. Rev. Sara will attend and looks forward to exploring further partnership opportunities between BUUF and Moms Demand Action.

If you are able to attend, please RSVP by clicking HERE

Religious Exploration
for Children & Youth

What goes on in those classrooms?

Are you new or new-ish to the Boise UU Fellowship? Have you been wondering what goes on in those classrooms down the hall during the adult service time? Are you interested in exploring your beliefs, values, and faith in more ways than sitting and singing in community with your fellow adults on Sunday mornings? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you're in luck! We have a place for you!

Our RE classrooms are a place where children are wise and adults can play. Our young people's Religious Exploration program is an extraordinary place where you can find your inner whimsy, wonder and awe!   People of all ages grow and learn in our RE wings during any given Sunday. Our teaching teams work together with flexible schedules and support each other in the classroom and beyond.

Does this all spark your interest? If so, contact Emmie, the Director of Religious Exploration, and talk about how you and your gifts could fit right in with the wonder and awe that is RE.
From the Board
President's Letter
Sue Langley

I started this letter on October 4 th when I returned from a most amazing sermon by Rev. LaWall on how we all can Pay it Forward, why the #BlackLivesMatter movement applies to us all, and why the Roseburg, OR, shootings are deeply felt and so very troubling.  There was also the demonstration of support for those who feel isolated and different by more than half the congregation wearing bags on their heads - what a sight and what a message!

I know there were many other themes and messages in her October 4 th sermon, but those are the ones I latched on to.  Along with the inspiring music from Lessie Brown and Mike Lemieux,  it was a truly powerful service.

So much happens in just one month.  There was a "pink out" to support Planned Parenthood's efforts to keep medical services for those most in need; there was a call to support the Syrian refugees; a call to support our local refugees as they lost their marketplace and then more were forced out of their housing; a shooting occurred in Roseburg that is so very close to home (Mark, my husband, taught at that college back in the early '90's); volunteers are organizing for the cropwalk to end hunger; and BUUF gamers are organizing to raise funds for the Children's Miracle Network (Tenje, our son, was confused why I would encourage him to sign up for a 24 hour gaming event - not my usual response to his screen time!) And there are so many others hard at work to end injustices, bring help where it's needed, and to end suffering. Action is necessary on many fronts.  By the time this letter is printed, who knows what new injustice we will encounter where our UU voice is needed. But that UU voice is strong with a deep history of helping those in need.  May we continue our journey towards social justice.

Thank you to those who attended the September 27 th Fall Gathering.  Lots of good information was shared and good conversation was had.

Please put November 8 th on your calendar.  There will be a congregational conversation after the second service that Sunday.  We will do an exercise to find our shared values - a most important step as we move forward.  Please join us.

Upcoming dates:

November 8 th Shared Values Congregational Conversation following the second service

Next Board meeting is October 15th at 6:45.  There is an ingathering at 6:30 of personal story and gratitude circle - official meeting starts at 6:45.

With respect,
Sue

Travel Bugs Travel Back to 1964

Claudia Fernsworth will share pictures and memories of her 51 years ago trip around the USA on Friday, October 16, 7:00 pm in the Channing Room.  The 1963 Pillsbury Bake-off  winning food will be shared.  Come and find out what the best of 1963-4 has to offer.......All are welcome

Sage Science
Robert Franklin's first religious background was Christian Science, and he's stayed in touch over the years. He'll share some of that interesting religious journey with us at the next meeting of the BUUF Sages, 9:30 am, Thursday, October 22. We meet at the Kopper Kitchen, 2661 Airport Way, for a no-host breakfast and friendly discussions. Newcomers are welcome! Contact Tom von Alten at  208 378-1217 or tva@fortboise.org for more information.

The Church of Star Trek

Most of the Star Trek episodes were actually Morality Plays, which had a profound effect on many of us. One person even said he learned his values from "The Church of Star Trek". That's why we talk about the episodes after watching them.

The next Trek Talk will be on Friday Oct 23 at 7 PM in the Channing Room, South Wing, BUUF. Free event, Free popcorn, and all ages welcome!

The next beautifully remastered on Blu-Ray story, to be shown on a big screen, will be about prejudice and the spirit of hate leading to violence (Guess which one that is!) - very timely for today!

Manos: the Hands of Fate -- Movie Night

Once again, just in time for Halloween, one of the worst movies ever made, rears its ugly head! But this time, it's the Restoration, in its original, full-color incompetence! You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll ask yourself, "Why did they ever do this?" and perhaps more to the point, "What am I doing here?"

For a frightful evening of fun, join us at BUUF on Friday, October 30th at 7:00 pm in the north wing. Free admission (donations to BUUF accepted), free popcorn and lemonade.

"Manos," named the "Worst Movie Ever Made" by Entertainment Weekly Magazine and featured in an article in the October, 2015 edition of Playboy, has become a cult classic. It has spawned stage plays, video games, a puppet play, and attempts at prequels and sequels. We have a choice: the Mystery Science Theater 3000 riff version with all of its laughs, and the
newly restored original. Which should we watch?

On a personal note, Bryan Jennings' father played the sheriff! Costumes are not required, but they couldn't hurt!

These Friendship Dinners in a home provide one of the most enjoyable and important aspects of BUUF - getting together with like-minded people in a social setting and getting to know each other better - especially new folks.

Mindful Meditation
Join Us!
Monday evenings, 6:30-8:00 p.m.
North Wing, Fahs Room

"We spend so much of our lives trying to avoid the present by fitfully rehashing the past and rehearsing the future" (Robert Caldwell, Cedar Lane UU Church, Bethesda, MD)

Mindful meditation essentially is being attentive to the present moment, this moment, NOW! Practiced regularly, mindfulness can become a fundamental way of being whether we are sitting in meditation, shopping for groceries, talking to a friend, or driving in rush hour traffic. Over time, this practice can help us feel more at ease with ourselves and with others, have a greater sense of integration of mind and body, and a greater receptivity to the spiritual.
