Meeting Minutes

  1. Announcements:
    It was clarified that anyone who can, is welcome to attend the Social Justice Council (SJC) retreat on August 24th from 9:00a.m. to noon at BUUF. Emailed confirmations should be sent to Jim Bigelow (jimbigelow51@gmail.com) or Sue Philley (suephilley@gmail.com).

    RJM is planning an evening potluck and movie for adults on October 14th, Indigenous Peoples Day. Movie considerations so far include, BlackkKlansman.
  2. Discussion
    Nancy Harms joined in today offering protocol for introducing a proposal to the BUUF Board of Directors regarding the adoption of an 8th UU principle focusing on dismantling racism. Nancy described the process of first getting on the agenda for the next Board of Directors meeting, and that a letter should be directed to Rachel Murphy, President, and Elaine Daly, Secretary. Further protocol will be determined following a response from the Board of Directors.

    Eileen queried regarding the formal or informal history of racial justice here at BUUF. It was concluded that past efforts were likely informal, though several congregants have expressed interest and initiated efforts through the years.
    Discussion regarding fund raising efforts for RJM included query regarding whether or not there is a church budget for newly formed ministries. Additionally, possible grant writing options to UUA.
  3. Summary
    • October 14th Indigenous Peoples Day. Adult education evening potluck and film. Tom awaiting confirmation from Mike Philley. Submit event to be put on the church calendar. Confirm what film will be shown.
    • Don will compose and email a letter to the BUUF Board of Directors, addressing President Rachel Murphy and Secretary Elaine Daily regarding a request to be put on the agenda for the upcoming Board of Directors Meeting on July 18, 2019, 6:30p.m. to 9:30p.m. The purpose of the request is to introduce a proposal for an 8th UU principle.
    • Diane to review Ted Talks, UU Dismantle White Supremacy website.
    • Eileen research idea for a RJM brochure, possible fund raising, grant writing to UUA options.
    • Book recommendation by Don: White Racial Frame by Joe Feagin
