An Introduction to Haiku

Instructor: Mike Philley

Description: Haiku is a minimalist form of poetry usually written in three lines. Originating in feudal Japan, a haiku expresses the fleeting presence of a single thread in the fabric of all existence. Often expressing insight into seasonality and other manifestations of the natural world, a well-composed haiku evokes that quality of human experience when time stands still and the heart moves. The class will consist of four evening sessions: 1. History of haiku as a poetic form; Japanese origin and masters; diffusion of haiku to the English-speaking world; examples of contemporary haiku, 2. Expressing the essence of “haiku mind,” 3. An experientially-based “haiku workshop” using the BUUF grounds for inspiration, 4. A celebratory session for sharing and appreciating the creativity of class participants.
