Drop-in Poetry Workshop

Meeting ID: 956 027 597   Password: chalice

with Debra Smith

All levels of experience are welcome because we all learn from each other. This is a non-threatening approach to short creative writing in response to a prompt. Most prompts work well to help us write poetry, but you don’t have to remember any of those poetic terms you may have once known. Each session will include mild instruction, sharing, and long period of writing. During this series of classes [you do not need to have attended the prior classes], participants will be encouraged to volunteer to lead one of the meetings, which entails selecting a theme and two poems, and perhaps a poetic element, and providing a writing prompt and facilitating discussion.

If the muse is refusing to visit you, here’s a writing gimmick you might try.
1. Free-write a whole page about some topic.  Fill the page, top to bottom, side to side.
2. Tear the paper in half down the length of the paper.
3. Now, write a poem out of the fragments that remain from either the left or right side, but you cannot choose words from the “discarded” side.
4. Delight in what emerges.

Materials: Please bring a notebook, laptop, or tablet and writing utensil.
