The Suspension of Disbelief
In this time of heightened awareness and outrage about coercion, bullying and victimization, we hear different perspectives and often know pretty quickly where our allegiances lie. We desire justice as well as safety and peace. But, as author Salmon Rushdie has said, “Nobody has the right to not be offended.” In this sermon we will explore the idea of suspending disbelief – setting aside preconceived judgments, suspicions and disagreements – in order to move closer to the kind of transformational learning that may help us emerge from a climate of fear and mistrust.
