Paul’s Epistles and Building A Church to Take Down an Empire – A Bible Study
The Christianity that we know today – or think we know – likely speaks more to the churches we’ve built in the last 2,000 years than the lived experience of a man named Jesus. Who wrote that history? It started with a letter. A series of letters written by Paul, epistles written to the earliest gatherings of Jesus-followers in places like Corinth, Thessaloniki, or Rome. All written in the hope that these small early churches could build a personal faith that could tackle an empire.
In this Bible Study, Wyatt Schroeder (with participants) will explore the advice that Paul gives the earliest gatherings of Christians. They will explore what it meant to be an apostle, one who so often was imprisoned for building a faith community. What does it say to us, as UU’s, working to build community during the time of empire? What does it say to a congregation that is willing to be imprisoned to empower a Universalist faith? Participants will write an epistle, providing advice on what steps they can take to live out our values.
