The early Quakers considered silence to be a direct path to God. This was a radical idea in its time. Silence remains a radical idea today. In our culture of iPhones, cell phones, the Internet, high-definition TV and continual bombardment of advertising, cultivating silence—as opposed to consuming products—is a radical idea. But it can connect us to—and keep us on—the path we’re supposed to be on.
