Buddhist Wisdom in the Form of Meditation
Eileen Oldag & Tom Neale
Class Description: Buddhist meditation teacher Sharon Salzberg alerts us that meditation isn’t a religion, an undertaking for those with special talent, a panacea nor self-indulgence. There is evolving evidence of physical and mental benefit, yet meditation is more than a physiological science. Given its deep, pervasive root in Buddhism, what might we expect from a meditation practice? What aspirations and understandings might we strengthen? How might meditation enlighten our day-to-day life?In four classes, we’ll experience five forms of Buddhist meditation, appreciate the understanding these practices help us develop, and explore together how these might be incorporated in our contemporary lives. With each form of meditation, we’ll touch its historical roots, and we’ll draw on the guidance of present-day teachers Pema Chodron (author of “The Places That Scare You”) and Thich Nhat Hanh (author of “Peace is Every Step”).When our classes complete, we hope to find our meditation practice to be a skillful tool meaningfully incorporated in our lives; a grounding when harsh winds blow; a well of understanding; an always evolving self-investigation. Tea and tangerines will be involved.
