Social Justice Council Meeting, 10/1/19

  • Attending the Collective Thriving Conference – Re-imagining communities where everyone is valued, everyone is safe, and everyone can thrive.  Dec 4 -5 at BSU.
    • $300 – $350 registration fee, 
    • Jim will talk with Rev. Sara about funding
      • should we apply that we need a scholarship? 
  • Discuss a priority for funding requests:
    • BUUF SJ Ministry 1st, then what?
    • this sounds good regarding BUUF SJ Ministries
    • we should ask for a rationale for request
    • let’s save half the funds for the spring 
  • Fall Social Justice Resolutions:
    • there will be two social justice resolutions this fall.
    • Our timeline:
      • Inform the Board of the Resolutions at their October meeting
      • Conduct congregational input and feedback on the afternoon of Sunday Oct. the 27th.
        • SJC members are present and available for questions and participation
      • Hold an extra meeting of the congregation on November 3rd, if needed
        • so we can involve as many people as possible before the vote on an adding an 8th UU principle.  
      • Review the input and modify the resolutions as needed at the Nov 5th meeting
      • Submit updated resolutions to the Board at their Nov. 21st meeting
      • Absentee voting in early Dec.
    • Logistics for the Oct 27th Congregation-wide Resolution Review
      • we’ll start the meeting with an announcement
        • Jim will make this from the podium after the 2nd service, 12:35
      • discussions will be done in two rooms,
        • one for each resolution,
        • approximately 1 hour per resolution
        • people will switch rooms to discuss both resolutions
        • Ask attendees: “could you vote for this resolution as written? If not what ideas would you need included to make it ok?”
        • 1st session: 12:45 – 1:20
        • 2nd session:  1:30 – 2:10
      • facilitators (one for each resolution): 
        • RJM folks, Betty & Diana
        • just write down comments  and feedback rather than modify resolution on the fly
        • capture a sense of group agreement and any standout disagreements
      • time keepers (one for each room)

      • Marni — put will put out materials in each room
    • handout will be given to participants as they enter a room 
      • Jim will create the handout, with help from Don and Sue
      • handout has 2 sheets
        • 1st page: the resolutions front and page
        • 2nd page:
          • 1 side resolution timeline,
          • 2nd side expectations for the day/instructions/ground rules
            • Sue will help with guidelines
      • we’ll need: 30 copies, 15/room
    • Jim: arrange for rooms — south wing,
    • Tess: arrange for  flip charts, easels, pens, tape to post comment pages
    • Jim: Advertising
    • All: after meeting clean up.
  • December  17, 2019 Social Justice Soiree
    • Sue will take on the arrangements
      • has asked Rev. Sara if she will ask the Black History Museum if we can hold our event there
      • It will be a potluck for food and drinks
  • Feb 2020 Social Justice Workshop
    • brief discussion
      • Jim:  similar to social justice workshop held on August 24, 2019
      • Sue/Marni: need to do something different to excite interest
    • Jim: send url of the evaluations of the 8/24 workshop to everyone to review
    • all: think of ideas for “taking it to the next level”
    • will discuss in November.
  • Round table:
    • Racial Justice Ministry
      • Oct 14 indigenous people’s day at BUUF in the evening
    • Refugee/Immigrant Ministry
      • Betty/Cathy will report what funds if any are needed for the Immigration Celebration Day
        • everyone said what an excellent event it was.
      • the grant request to the UUA from the Asylum seeker sponsor project did get a BUUF board support letter, which was submitted to UUA grant people
    • Climate Action Team
      • great turn out at Sept 20th world-wide Student Climate Strike
      • Web conference call on Oct 16th for next steps
    • Pride – No comment 
    • Homeless/Parking Lot, hunger, Reproductive Justice, other? – No Comment 
  • Sue will do the opening/closing at the Nov. 5th meeting.
