DESCRIBE HOW THE MONEY WILL BE USED (Example:  purchase materials, pay labor fees)

  • The money will be used to reduce BUUF’s emissions of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) that are contributing to an ever increasing and destructive global warming.  The money will also be used, as needed, to educate and inspire others to reduce their GHG emissions.

DESCRIBE HOW THE SPECIAL APPEAL WILL SUPPORT THE MISSION OF YOUR GROUP OR BUUF.

  • The funds will enable the Climate Action Team to take strategic actions such as 1) switching to clean electricity, i.e., electricity that is not produced by coal and natural gas power stations, 2) reducing BUUF emissions by initiating a program to make the building more efficient by replacing inefficient windows and doors, 3) replacing GHG emitting equipment with electric equivalents, 4) educating the congregation and public about carbon footprints and how they can reduce them.

DESCRIBE THE PLAN FOR IMPLEMENTING THE PROJECT WITHIN THE NEXT 12 MONTHS.

  • Based on the UUA’s Green Sanctuary program we will proceed in three stages:
  • Stage 1 – Team Building: Establish a team from the Climate Action Team, Building, Outdoor Sanctuary and other interested people and complete an initial plan of action by completing the Cool Congregations carbon footprint calculator for the building, a carbon footprint assessment for the outdoor sanctuary and other information found during this stage by coordinating with the Green Sanctuary, the Idaho Chapter of the Interfaith Power and Light, Boise’s Climate Action Team and other community partners.
  • Stage 2 – Congregational Education and Engagement:  Actions and spending priorities rationale from the initial plan, will be discussed and vetted in a least one planning and educational mini-workshop. Other workshops throughout the year will educate and engage the congregation about reducing, coping with, and adapting to global warming.
  • Stage 3 – Action Plan: Begin implementing the results of the mini-workshops and adjust as needed.

AMOUNT COMMITTED FOR A HIGH OPENING BID (approximately 10 to 20% of goal)

Imagining a Carbon Neutral World with Green Sanctuary 2030

Our days are getting hotter, our water resources are threatened, forests are burning, and air quality is worsening.  We are at a crossroads and must act now because the self-reinforcing nature of these conditions means they will only increase and multiply.  We have a moral and spiritual imperative to act to lessen the damage to the world.  The UUA’s Green Sanctuary 2030, Cool Congregations, and Boise’s Climate Action Roadmap provide guidelines, help and support for us to act. Our goal is a 45% reduction in BUUF’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and to be carbon neutral by 2050.   This is a multi-year program to reduce, cope with and adapt to global warming.  This program is also intended to provide inspiration and a model for others to act, and together we will have a positive impact on our worsening climate.

Our Special Appeal request is for $15,000.  The funds will be used to start Green Sanctuary 2030 and Cool Congregations accreditation, create a baseline carbon footprint assessment and energy audit, renew the Climate Action Team, and create a multi-year plan to reach a 45% reduction in the footprint of our buildings and grounds by 2030.  This plan also  includes: switching to 100% clean electricity through Idaho Power’s Green Energy Program at a cost of an additional $0.01 per kWh (this will increase our electric bill $47 – $57 per year on average);  reducing our energy use  by starting to replacing inefficient windows and doors, as funds permit, starting with Reverend Sara’s office;  inviting speakers to educate the congregation about responding to global warming, and;  replacing greenhouse gas emitting equipment with electric powered equivalents.

IF THE SPECIAL APPEAL FALLS SHORT OF YOUR GOAL, WHAT IS YOUR GROUP’S PLAN FOR SUCCESSFULLY USING THE ACTUAL MONEY RAISED?

  • We will prioritize our activities and expenses based on available funds
