Support for Jax Perez and Perez v City of Boise

January 2022

The Boise Unitarian Universalist Fellowship declares that its members and friends are in full agreement with the findings of the Idaho Human Rights  Commission that Jax Perez was sexually harassed and discriminated against while on their job at the Hillcrest branch of the Boise Public Library. Additionally, we fully support Jax Perez and the American Civil Liberties Union in their suit Perez v City of Boise.

Jax Perez was harassed while at work and then discriminated against because they self-identified as a member of the LGBTQ community. They were then subjected to a campaign of hostility and retaliation for refusing to disavow their rights as a human, a trans individual, and a queer individual. No one, in any employment sector, let alone employed by our City which claims to be welcoming, should have to hide their identity at their workplace. Ever.

We firmly believe that each of us has worth and dignity, and that worth includes our gender and our sexuality. We value diversity of sexuality and gender and see it as a spiritual gift. We support Jax Perez and their efforts to be treated with fairness, dignity, and respect.  Respect, dignity and fair treatment are fundamental for creating inclusive communities that are equitable, safe and thriving; values our city claims to promote.
